Niki Stajkovic ist tot

Nikola „Niki“ Stajkovic ist Samstag völlig überraschend mit nur 57 Jahren bei einem Badeunfall in Salzburg-Rif gestorben. Das einstige „Wunderkind“ der österreichischen Wasserspringer vertrat Österreich fünfmal bei Olympischen Spielen. Erstmals 1972 in München, wo der damals 13-jährige den 18. Platz vom 10-m-Turm belegte. Seine beste Platzierung war 1980 in Moskau Rang Acht.

Die Verabschiedung von Niki Stajkovic findet am 2. März um 10 Uhr in der evangelischen Christus-Kirche, Schwarz-Straße 25, in Salzburg stattfindet.

Stajkovic wanderte nach seiner sportlichen Karriere nach Hawaii aus, wo Surfen zu seiner große Leidenschaft wurde. In Hawaii etablierte sich der gebürtige Salzburger auch in die Immobilienbranche und leitete zuletzt zusätzlich als Sportdirektor die Red Bull Cliff-Diving-Tour. Niki war maßgeblich dafür verantwortlich, dass Klippenspringen ins WM-Programm aufgenommen wurde.

Neben seinen fünf Olympiastarts feierte Niki Stajkovic zahlreiche nationale und internationale Erfolge. Er war zwei Mal Junioren-Europameister, gewann insgesamt zwölf österreichische Meisterschaften, holte 1981 EM-Bronze vom Dreimeterbrett, zahlreiche Podestplätze in Welt- und Europacup-Bewerben und gewann viele klassische Meetings. 1987 auch EM-Silber vom 3m Brett.

Die Sportfamilie verliert mit Niki nicht nur einen begeisterten Sportler, sondern eine engen Freunde und großen Förderer des Wasserspringens.

FINA learnt with immense sadness about the sudden loss of Niki Stajkovic, member of the FINA High Diving Committee. Mr. Stajkovic was a big enthusiast and promoter of the inclusion of High Diving in the FINA programme. Thanks to his precious contribution and hard work, this spectacular discipline was contested for the first time at the 2013 FINA World Championships, in Barcelona (ESP).  FINA condolence letter to his wife Nicole: “We will remember him as a person who cared in the first place about the safety of the athletes and did all to present them with perfect and safe conditions, so that they could perform at their best in the sport that he loved”. In this moment of grief, FINA presents its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and to the entire diving and high diving community.
